Boonchoou - Food VIC

5 /5 Christopher Wu: Boonchoou is a Thai restaurant with a more market-style, open kitchen setup, which you do not usually see at your standard Thai place. It reminded me a bit of bar-style open kitchen dining, and the food was very tasty, almost too tasty at times. Some dishes were quite overpowering, which I later found out was from the fish sauce. Every dish we ordered was packed with flavour. My favourite was the red duck curry. The curry sauce was excellent, and the duck was tender and cooked as well as you would expect. The green curry was also decent, but the red curry was definitely the standout for me. The pad kra pao was a bit different from the usual versions but still very tasty and quite salty, so it definitely needed rice alongside it. The tom yum soup was as good as you get, very solid and well balanced. For entrees, the pork belly was really good. The salad was okay but very strong in flavour, a bit too intense for my liking. The calamari was not for me, mainly due to the texture and flavour, but I can see how others would enjoy it. The pad thai was slightly on the sweet side, but the noodles were well cooked and the ingredients were solid. Overall, a bold and flavour-packed Thai spot with some standout dishes, especially the red duck curry.

5 /5 Ton V: Excellent authentic Thai food in a casual setting, yet with classy food. We noticed this place by chance in a side alley in Chinatown and they were just opening the shop for its Sunday business. Nice menu with pictures and a lot of options for drinks, mocktails, beers and wines. Food is tasty and beware that Thai normal spicy may be quite spicy for mild eaters. Note the (sliding) door is locked so you need to get the attention of one of the waiters.

5 /5 Thanyada: Very creative menus. They have a variety of food options which are different from other Thai restaurants in town or even in Sydney. Super tasty, and pretty presentations. The staff were nice and friendly, always walking around to clear the empty plates, checking up on drinks and everything. Definitely will be back!!

4 /5 Angel Khong: Went to Boonchou & ordered the Chinese sausage spring roll entrée, biryani rice with fried squid, grilled pork chop with chilli tamarind sauce, and baked coconut custard with hazelnut praline for dessert. The spring roll was tasty, though it was mostly filled with vege & tofu rather than sausage. The fried squid was nicely crispy, but the biryani rice lacked fragrance. The grilled pork chop was lovely and full of flavour, but the sauce wasn’t as punchy as expected & the portion looked much smaller than what was pictured. The dessert was quite creamy with a strong coconut flavour, but it wasn’t served with the Thai tea ice cream as listed. Service was prompt and friendly. The setting was modern, though not especially cosy.
