5 /5 Peter: Stepping through the doorway of Eugene’s, I was immediately struck by how much this small cafe felt like home. The atmosphere was a rich blend of sensory details: I noticed the metal bells hanging above the counter, heard the steady rhythm of the coffee machine brewing, and the comfortable, unburdened laughter of people enjoying their breakfast. Everyone around looked happy and completely at ease, as if they had no cares in the world.
​What really elevated the visit was the service. I was greeted by a charming waitress (I apologise that I cannot recall her name). She served and took the time to chat, engaging like a best friend. Regardless of how busy the cafe was, she listened to every word I said without rushing, a rare quality I rarely find in other cafes I’ve visited. It’s the little, thoughtful details that seal the experience—when my water glass was empty, it was refilled instantly.
​My Latte was served beautifully, and I noticed the delightful, old-fashioned spoons—a charming touch that reminded me of the pieces my own grandma used to display. The Latte itself was great. However, my second coffee, a Long Black, was unfortunately scorching hot. It was probably a little too hot, which ended up burning the flavour.
​Moving on to the menu, I did find it quite challenging to read. The font is relatively small, and more importantly, the markings for allergens are not very clear. For anyone managing food allergies, this poses a genuine risk, as it would be easy to miss a critical warning.
​Due to my own allergies, I was unable to sample many of the menu items. Unfortunately, there were no explicit gluten-free or dairy-free options available for any other items, including those in the cake fridge. This meant I settled for poached eggs on gluten-free bread, accompanied by bacon and hash browns.
​The eggs were poached beautifully, but the accompaniments let the dish down. The hash browns were clearly the pre-made, frozen type, and the bacon tasted artificial and was not pleasant. Furthermore, the un-toasted gluten-free bread was the standard supermarket kind. I firmly believe that if cafes want to expand their customer base, catering thoughtfully to people with allergies is a necessity, and investing in better alternatives is a must.
My ​final Thoughts
​I understand that this review is entirely based on the minimal options available to me due to my dietary needs, and someone without restrictions might have a completely different food experience.
​However, the outstanding, homely atmosphere and the exceptionally attentive service are unmatched. Despite the food quality issues, the warmth of the cafe will certainly not stop me from returning.
