3 /5 Stuart J Howie: Beautiful location. Fine wine. Interesting food. Unfortunately, Rochford lets itself down when it comes to the human touch. I undertook a fair degree of research to zone on the best place in the Yarra Valley for a multi-generation family lunch. The shared lamb shoulder was great, in particular (although regret not ordering a side of veggies). Coffee was tops. And the bill was reasonable, all things considered. But management might want to tighten up on its customer service and training practices. Firstly, it was disappointing we couldnt snag a window position. This was despite a few tables there vacant for the entire duration we were there. We had to chase up drinks. I gathered we were being served by a new waiter, so thats all cool, and he was very pleasant. But getting the bill settled was a bit of a rigmarole. We got the paper bill but there was no explanation of where to pay. You couldnt do it at the table, at the bar or another nearby service area. You had to pay in the entry area in the busy shop area. When I said it was a bit confusing the server simply replied, "thats okay". Oh, right. It was a pretty frantic Sunday in summer, so it was quite noisy in the restaurant too with adjacent wine tastings and tourist parties. Ive been here a few times now. But, on balance, I dont think Ill be back - and Ill continue to search for that right venue in the Yarra Valley that at least ticks more boxes. Open to suggestions.
