Nasi Kandar Trans Mas (Malaysian Restaurant) - VIC

Matthew Enjoyed my lunch there. Authentic Malaysian South Indian home cooked food taste and flavours. The chef was previously the head chef at Rich Mahal in Vermont South. Friendly proprietor. Chicken 65 is served here. Super reasonable prices - 2 meat 2 veg meal only $16.90. Really nice environment. Will be back to try their mee goreng and biryani.

Shahi Qila - VIC

Osman ShaJahan Pleasantly surprised by the food here. We bought a few dishes for takeaway - lamb biryani, meatballs, keema & potatoes and chicken karahi - all from the bain marie. All four dishes were good. We enjoyed them over two days and will definitely return.

Citrine Bistro & Bar, Olinda - VIC

Baggage Claim Philosopher All true tests of civilisation begin with the lie, ‘Let’s just have one drink.’ That’s how I ended up at Citrine in Olinda, sipping a Virgin Mojito so refreshing it briefly made me believe I was a responsible adult. Crisp, icy, clean, the kind of drink that hydrates your soul while judging your past. Then the cocktails arrived, and suddenly all that virtue disappeared. These weren’t random pours, this place has a dedicated bar person, and that makes all the difference. You can taste the confidence. Somebody back there takes this personally. The ambience is properly high-falutin, not ‘look at me’ fancy, but ‘yeah, we know’ fancy. The music is cool in a way that makes you nod your head subconsciously, like your body’s agreeing to something your brain hasn’t signed off on yet. The service is solid, calm, professional, nobody rushing you, nobody oversharing, just smooth execution like a well-run operation. Then the food shows up trying to ruin your discipline. The fish of the day, a salmon, was cooked beautifully and paired with risotto that clearly went to finishing school. And on the land side, there’s grilled cauliflower, and listen, cauliflower usually shows up pretending to be a main character and fails. Not here. This cauliflower earned its spot. It showed up confident, seasoned, and minding its business. Citrine is the kind of place that makes you laugh at yourself for thinking you were ‘just popping in.’ You don’t pop into Citrine. You get reeled in. And you enjoy every second of it. And then came the crème catalan, which I’m convinced exists here as some kind of culinary trap. Traditional, perfectly executed, crackly on top and silky underneath, the kind of dessert that makes you forget your own name. We ordered it once. Then again. Then a third time, at which point the table stopped pretending we were making rational choices. If this dish were any more authentic, it would start correcting your pronunciation. To die for, and clearly we were willing to prove it.

Ceylon Curry Bar Cafe & Restaurant - VIC

Tanila Ceylon Curry Bar Cafe & Restaurant is a hidden gem tucked away in Dandenong. The food is outstanding. We went for the all you can eat option which included fried rice, rice and curry, and egg hoppers for $22. There is also an all you can eat hopper option for $15, but I would definitely recommend the former as it is well worth it. The standouts were the egg hoppers, chicken curry, lunu miris, and the Sri Lankan fried rice. My favourite, though, was the unique Sri Lankan fish curry. It was very different to anything I have had before and clearly a chef special. To top it off, the gentleman who greeted us was incredibly welcoming, friendly, and helpful, which made the experience even better. I would definitely come back again.
