5 /5 Christopher Wu: Ton & Co is easily the best katsu spot I’ve had in Melbourne so far. I’ve been to their sister restaurant in the CBD (Katsu Retsu), which was decent — but this absolutely blew it out of the water, and with more generous servings too.
Tonkatsu was spot on: crispy, light batter and juicy inside. Tried both the striploin and ribeye — striploin had more meat, ribeye had more fat and flavour. Honestly couldn’t pick a winner, both were excellent. In hindsight, probably didn’t need to order both (rookie error… or just greedy).
The much-hyped ox tongue skewers were just okay for me. Texture was a bit odd — someone said it was like spam (lol), not far off, though still clearly better. Just didn’t hit for me.
The potato salad was elite. Creamy, seasoned well without being too heavy. Ebi (prawns) were fresh and juicy, and the fried oysters were great in my opinion — though a mate found the warm texture a bit odd since he’s used to them cold.
Sauces were all solid, and matched the food well.
Massive servings, proper katsu execution — would highly recommend. Will be back (but maybe won’t order the whole menu next time).
