1 /5 Simran Kapoor: We visited our local cafe for the first time to try Melbournes famous coffee scene. Unfortunately, this wasnt it.
My husband asked for a magic coffee, double ristretto with 3/4 full flat white. The owner tried his best and made a double shot piccolo, which is fine since not everyone knows what a magic is.
I didnt want to complicate it too much, so I asked for a large flat white. To my surprise, I was given a mug filled to the brim with milk with what tasted like instant coffee. A standard double shot flat white has around 110ml of milk, but this was probably closer to a latte, except the milk wasnt steamed properly, so maybe thats what they thought was a flat white.
We told the server there was a bit too much milk, as not to offend them, and asked if we could change it to a double shot flat white with the milk equivalent of a single so they might get the portions right.
However, I dont think she realised you need to heat the milk less when there is a smaller quantity, so the coffee they served came out pipingly overheated.
As she handed it over, she said she would come see me after to sort it out, despite not telling us that we were going to be charged for the change.
As we left, we spoke to the server to explain that the first coffee was not a flat white, but she was adamant that it was and that they dont just provide free coffees to people.
We then asked to speak to the owner who made it, and he came in exclaiming that a flat white has more milk than a latte because its less steamed. He obviously confused there being more unsteamed milk, not understanding that the total volume of milk needs to be less.
He said he knows what hes doing as hes been making coffees for 35 years and that we dont have to pay for it if were going to complain over $4.
At this point, I was genuinely surprised, realising this wasnt a skill issue but rather an ego one.
To be honest, its a shame. We would have loved to come back if maybe they could go slightly off menu and make an actual coffee rather than coffee-flavoured milk, but it seems pride can sometimes get the best of us.
