3 /5 nickelfoodrevs: I’ve been eyeing off this place for a little while because I saw a picture where they had lamb and chicken yiros over a charcoal fire, which piqued my interest. I thought, “If I come down to Rye, I’ve gotta try this place,” and today was the day.
Overall, it was a decent feed, but not one that fully lived up to what I was hoping for.
I was in the mood for something a bit more heavy, so I got their medium sized HSP with lamb and chicken, with BBQ, tzatziki and chilli sauce, which came to $25.
Before I get to what let me down a little, there are quite a few things to note here.
I got this in 6–7 minutes, which is fast and always appreciated.
The meat was, for the most part, succulent and tender.
There was no bad chip with black spots or green patches. Quite impressive.
There weren’t vats of oil at the bottom of the box. Nearly spotless.
Chips that didn’t interact with the meat and sauce were somewhat crisp.
The tzatziki sauce had a nice garlic flavour and wasn’t overly sweet or bitter.
The portions were quite filling for the price.
Now, the meat is a step up above your standard kebab takeaway meat, but for something that’s charcoaled, I was expecting a little more flavour. Not that what I got was completely bland, mind you, but it felt like it was missing something.
Typically, yiros is marinated with various spices, vinegar, tomato juice, oil, et cetera. But this yiros tasted maybe slightly salty/smoky in areas, and not aromatic, almost like it wasn’t sufficiently marinated. That said, credit where credit’s due, not one piece of tough meat. None.
The chips were somewhat crisp, but not as crisp as I hoped.
What this meant is that the chips that came into contact with the sauce and meat got soft very quickly. The chips were also a little bland. They probably could have done with a little more salt or better quality seasoning.
The BBQ and chilli sauces weren’t very noticeable, leaving the tzatziki to take centre stage. I would have liked more balance between them, for example, a stronger, smoky tasting BBQ sauce or a spicier chilli sauce.
Otherwise, I see potential. Again, not bad, but with a little bit of tweaking, I think this HSP could be a contender for “best Hellenic Snack Pack in Melbourne.”
