4 /5 Swarnalakshmi Sankarmahadevan: We hosted a birthday party at Chai n Chilli Clayton recently. Overall, the food was excellent and our guests really enjoyed it. A few people even commented that it didn’t feel like a typical North Indian restaurant — the dishes had a unique and special touch.
Our menu included welcome drinks, tomato soup, mini dabeli, Veg Kolhapuri, Kaju Makhana curry, plain rice with aamti dal, kulcha, and rabdi gulab jamun shots. Everything was tasty and well prepared. At $35 per plate, the food quality and variety were good value. The team was also thoughtful enough to keep a few dishes aside for us as hosts, which we really appreciated.
We had about 10 extra guests turn up unexpectedly and the staff managed it well. They charged us for the additional plates, which was completely fair. They also allowed us to arrive early to complete decorations and were accommodating at the start.
One downside — after the meal, while guests were still seated and chatting, staff began folding tables and asked people to stand up as if the time was up. This wasn’t clearly communicated beforehand and some guests felt rushed and uncomfortable. Clearer communication around event timing and wrap-up expectations would make a big difference.
